WELCOME TO ISLAND PAG!
Be part of history.
The island of Pag
Wherever you look, whether it’s the gorgeous clear blue sea, it’s striking mountains or picturesque towns and villages, Pag has something to offer.
Being one of the sunniest islands in Croatia, it has you covered whenever you decide to visit.
On one side Mountain range Velebit fills the horizon with its impressive size and beauty, and on the other, the clear blue sea seamlessly meets the sky.
The History
The island of Pag begins its ravishingly rich story with Illyrian Tribes who settled the island during the Bronze Age. After ancient Illyrians, Romans took possession and remained until the 7th century, when Croats arrived and still occupy the island till this very day. Every nation that governed this part of the Adriatic had made their presence felt on the island: Ottomans and Venetians have brought their trade, Austrians and French have waged war; fascists have had their tragic concentration camps until Yugoslavia took over and dissolved into modern day Croatia…
Many have made their mark, but Pag remained, taking an artefact from every one of them and preserving it to be displayed and enjoyed by future generations.
We invite you to dive deep into the rich history of Pag and explore these artefacts, landmarks and places. More importantly, we urge you to meet and talk to the friendly locals of the island, who will tell you hidden tales, and show you old ways and customs that are being passed on from one generation to the other.
The People
People of Pag have played a much more important role in island’s history than nations that came and left throughout the years. Ever since the ancient times, residents of the island have developed, nurtured and passed on many skills and trades Pag is renowned for all over the globe. There was never a blueprint by which the world-famous Pag lace had been made. The knowledge of lacemaking was passed on from mother to daughter, and later taught to younger generations by nuns of the Order of Saint Benedict.
This time-honored tradition ensured that each lace ever made is completely unique, a one of a kind masterpiece of its author. Whether it was the case of olive growing, fishing, or various stages of cheese and wine making, people of Pag poured their heart and soul into everything that was ever done on the island. Results include numerous products which are known in almost every little corner of the world and the tradition which is still kept alive today by about 9000 residents of this small island. We have tried to pay respect to all those that played a part in the rich history of Pag, by telling their stories and traditions.
